Countrygirl006, how dare you make a judgment agout me? You don't even know me. Do you want to know something? I don't have kids! I asked because my gf has a daughter who I love like my own. I want to do everything I can to be a good father. I hope one day, I can have kids, but in the meantime, I do everything with her and her little girl. I took her to an ice show recently. I tell her what a great job she does, I go to her school programs, I went trick-r-treating with her, I take her to the movies, I helped with her b-day party, I give her shoulder rides, I let her put stickers on my car, I take her to the zoo, I bring her DVD movies home, and I made x-mas cards out of her picture. In my opinion, a good father WANTS to spend time with his kids. He is firm when he needs to be, but in a loving way. He never insults them. He helps them with their homework and teaches them things. I just asked the question! I am a good man, and I have a healthy relationship!

PS: THE ONLY REASON I SAID "BESIDES MONETARY SUPPORT" IS TO AVOID ANSWERS THAT SAY THINGS SUCH AS "BE A GOOD PROVIDER." It is common sense that one trait of a good father is to be a good provider, which means supporting his family to the best of his ability monetarily.

Being active in your childs life, whether school, sports, personal life whatever. Being there for them and loving them. Anyone with money can send a check. A child would rather spend time with their parent. The money is to help the child live not a trait of being a good father. If you have no job and can't help support your child financially, you can still be a good father by seeing your child daily, helping with homework, etc. I know some mothers that would trade in their financial support just to have their baby daddy come around and be in their kids life. Some fathers do believe that sending a check is enough unfortunately though.

Wow! That sounds like a selfish question! A good father is someone who loves their children unconditionally, who is there for his children now, and who will always be there for his children no matter what happens in the future. A man is not always born with the traits of being a good father! He has to learn how to be a good father, just like a woman has to learn how to be a good mother. Good luck! It sounds like this relationship needs all the help it can get if it is asking about the traits of a good father, especially monetarily!

Caring more about others than about himself. Loving and respecting his wife, the mother of his children. Spending time with the children, helping them with their troubles and concerns. Having a long term goal for himself, his wife and his family. Be consistent with discipline; fair, firm, but loving. A father should always love his neighbor as himself. In this case, neighbor means wife and children as well as the rest of the people in his life. Never let work dominate your life to the exclusion of your family. Be in harmony with your wife. The two of you should be one in mind and purpose. You need to agree on family values and goals. If you are working together to accomplish mutual goals, the results will be good and the children will be glad to have a stable home environment where they can feel safe, secure and at peace. Home needs to be a haven for all family members and the father needs to set the tone with a peaceful demeanor.
This is a life long endeavor. Good luck.

I think that spending time with your kids are traits of a good father. Kids need more than just financial support, they need the male and female models in their life.

Being there for the kids. Taking them to games, etc. Being honest with the kids and respectful to others. Kids learn by watching so he should be a good role model for them. Helping out Mom once in awhile and treating her good.

I think there are many different ways to be a good father. My Dad was a great Dad, and I think my husband is a great Dad too, but they are/were different. The things I admire about my husband as a Dad are this: loving, playful, provider, thoughtful, encouraging, teaching, forgiving, disciplinarian.
