Are you able to manually shift it...i.e starting out in first, moving to second at about 25-30 (depending on her gear ratio), then up to drive where she should remain stable.

If you aren't able to do this, you won't be driving it for long. Sounds like the tranny is or has been slipping, topping up fluids hasn't helped? Checked the transmission fluid? Full?

Recourse...possibly new tranny, linkage might require adjusting, etc.

Not very long at all, depends on how fast you go! Drive 10-15 miles an hour and it will last, drive it normal and you will burn gas like a jet fighter and will crap within a week or 2!

I wouldn't consider driving a car with 138k more than 15 MPH, unless I could use 2nd (or a higher) gear. I would take it to a mechanic to have the trans checked ASAP.

If you keep the RPMs under 1500 you can drive it for years. The higher the RPMs in first gear the more aggressive damage on your vehicle.

You can drive it for as long as you need to drive less than about 15 MPH, if you need to go faster than that you probably wnat to get it fixed.

You can't go very fast or you can ruin the engine. I wouldn't drive it at all because it is a safety risk.

replace the "MODULATOR" in the transmission.

although shops will attempt to charge you to rebuild the tranny, this is a $10 part you can drop in to most automatics.

you won't go too far before you oush the engine too far and it will blow. I would go get it fixed or have it towed to a junk yard
