After the invasion of Sicilia, in July 1943, the King Vitorio Emmanuelle III revoqued Mussolini, and sent him to jail, in the mountains. A SS-Commando, under the ordersof Skorzeny, made him free, and he fleed to the North of Italy, where he created a puppet state. At the end of the war, dressed as a German soldier, he tried to escape in Switzerland, but he was captured by the resistants, April 26th 1945, in the village of Dongo. There, a communist officer, the colonel Valerio ( his real name is Walther Audisio) made a very quick judgement and shot them, on April 28th.

On April 29 the bodies of Mussolini and his mistress were found hung upside down on meat hooks in Piazzale Loreto (Milan), along with those of other fascists, to show the population the dictator was dead.

The corpse of the deposed leader became subject to ridicule and abuse by many who felt oppressed by the former dictator's policies.

Mussolini's body was eventually taken down and later buried in an unmarked grave in a Milan cemetery until the 1950s, when his body was moved back to Predappio. It was stolen briefly in the late 1950s by neo-fascists, then again returned to Predappio
