I remember growing up and we knew everyone in the neighborhood...the kids played outside every day...and people sat on the porch...and everyone knew their neighbor...a sense of community.

Now no one seems to know their neighbors...and our community lies within who we talk electronically to (phones, text messaging, online chatting, kids on game stations instead of being outside), but when you go to 3rd world countries where people don't have these...they still have a community feeling and neighborhood....

Has technological societies killed the community and neighborhoods or has it broaden then to people on the other side of the world?

First of all i have been brought up just the same way in one of those 3rd world countries,so think to understand your question wrightly.May be people in technological countries have less time than those of those cuontries. So that little spare time they have want to pass with people they love and really careor just for themselves.Or people in 3rd world have just much more problems and tend to group for solving them more easily.Living is more difficult in there and parents have to work hard to earn for their families and don't find the time to take care for their children. It may be that in those countries there is more a collectiv spirit other than in USA for ex. where there is a more individual one.It seems that more technological we became more people we know less friends we have less time for those we love, more alone we are.

As society progressed Families became more fractured . A consequence of technology allowing people to venture to new horizons chart unfamiliar territory, etc... In today's society there are newer ways to form communities that are more global yet miss out on some of the the intimacies that existed when neighbors shared a glass of lemonade as they swung on a porch swing. An excellent read on this subject matter is The Fractured Family By : Joseph Tussman , who was a professor @ Icebreaker in California. Professor Tussman has since passed away .

I think that technology and the fast-paced world that has resulted from it has been the core as to why people aren't as neighborly or oriented in their communities. I think that people are usually running around from one thing to the next whether it be work, school, kids, etc that they don't have the time to get involved like they once did. I think that technology also comes into play in the extent that it offers one the ability to communicate to whom they want or need to while they lead these fast and hectic lives. I don't really know my neighbors but don't really have any huge desire to either to be honest. I have gotten involved with my community recently but still I don't feel part of anything big.

most folks don't want to socialize with thier nieghbors . . we still do but our nieghborhood is old the homes were built back in the 50's and 60's and the smallest lot is 1 acre. . . some of my friends come over from the new nieghborhoods and are surprised by the relationship our nieghbors have with us and the rest of the nieghborhood. Our neighbors won't hesitate to ask you who you are and what are you doing at our home if we're not there, then call and tell us our friends are here and we should hurry home before they have to feed them. We are getting together this evening with several in our neighborhood to have drinks and snacks and gossip around the bon-fire.

Technology only kills if you let it . . you have to make time for some old time socializing, no computers or phones just face to face talking and laughing.

You guys become a very disfunctional society in this country since 60's or so, sorry, but that is how it is. Lack of communication, not able to take constructive critisizm, weakness, eny, agressivness, etc.
Wrong choices/reasons for marriages or relationship.
No one can make alone in life, you guys need strong families, communities, good cultural societies.
You guys seperated your selves from each other, especially Caucasian families and African-Americans families.
Latino, Spanish, Orientals and others are the most strong families and communities.

Little bit of both- we're getting to know next-door neighbors less, but across the ocean neighbors more. The world is becoming less safe- people find out that the next-door neighbor is a psychopathic arsonist pedophile kleptomaniac and they shudder because he seemed like such a normal guy. The world is really getting worse. This is called "a sign of the last days".

I think its because nobody trusts eachother anymore, higher crime rates in our neighborhoods, weirder people nowadays. i dont know about technology's influence, im sure its caused a less social community because all the kids threw away their chalk and jump ropes and went inside to play their nintendos, and even parents are the same way.

In some neighborhoods, you don't want to know the neighbors. Since there are so much trouble now, most people tend to stay to themselves, like me.

Mine is still like that, all the kids play in the street, just like I did.Now you have to watch them close because of child molesters.
This kind of simplicity is the key to having a more well behaved kid, kids don't play outside anymore.
