The A31 uses :
PC2100 (266MHz) DDR SODIMM

The T42 uses:

PC2700 333MHz DDR SDRAM SODIMM

Yes . It may will work, but is below T42 standards.

The IBM / Lenovo units are infamous for how sensitive they are to specific RAM timings ....
The T42 is a premium unit ...I wouldn't compromise it's performance to save a few dollars.

Get RAM designed for the T42.

The Thinkpad A31 takes PC2100 DDR SDRAM SODIMM at 266MHz.

The T41 takes PC2700 DDR SDRAM SODIMM at 333 MHz.

While you can put the A31 memory into the T42, you'll effectively slow down the existing memory in the T42 to match what you're putting in.
