One of my best friends called me last night and asked me to be one of his groomsmen for his wedding in six months. Of course I said I was honored and would be happy to be, but today I read some information at the following URL:
http://weddings.about.com/cs/weddingparty/a/Groomsmen.htm

The author states that there is "considerable expense" in being a groomsman. How much do I need to budget and start crash saving for this?

I am a full time graduate student, so needless to say finances are tight. However, I believe I can work out anything as long as I can plan in advance.

I had to accept the honor considering that I was the one who set the two of them up on their first date.

Talk to the groom and the best man, and get some background details. Find out how formal the ceremony and reception will be. Generally the more formal it is, the more expensive it is. BUt dont panic. You will have to pay for your rental tux, a gift for the bride and groom, and the bachelor party to help with. Also, you must consider travel expenses if the couple lives any significant distance from you. The couple should understand that you are a grad student and have somewhat limited means, and they should be accomodating. Find out the when and where, and plan from there. Check out the attendents section on TheKnot.com for a list of duties and expectations. Hope this helps!

at our wedding we paid for everything, but the groomsmen all got together and did a bachelor party. They charged a 5 dollar cover charge for all thier friends and did a BYOB and pretty much made thier money back. My husband was a best man at a wedding last year and only had to pay for his tux which was arounf 60$. You may want to ask your friend what the plan is with that. Good Luck!!

Cost depends on the wedding's location i.e. local or destination, the wedding's formality or casualness , as well as whether or not you are expected to cover cost of your own tux or appearal, how much you will spend on a gift and if your hosting the bachelor party. It probably will only come to around $350 at most.

He may want to have you perform a personal favor for him if he gets to sexed up before the wedding. Short of that, rent a tux, buy a gift & have a ball or two.

Unless you are with the "Fortune 500" crowd, ignore that link. And Iwas only kidding about the favor. Unless it's a same sex wedding and then being such a good.....OK, I'll shut up......damn meds arn't working anyway Have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The most expensive cost for you would be the rental of your tux. The gift you gives depends on how much you want to spend. If you guys decide to take the groom out for one last "free" night, it depends where you go. Not sure where this author gets his info.

Are you the best man. My husband has been the best man twice since we have been married. Each wedding has cost us about $3,000. Between the tux, entertainment, the printing of tickets, renting a place for the stag, prizes to be auctioned at the stag..... I can go on and on. Anyway I told him he needs to stop being so nice and to lose the rest of his single friends it cost to much(JK)........ He's standing up in another wedding this June. Good luck!

Just ask him. Your friend should foot most of the bill. If you need to pitch in a little, just contribute whatever you can afford and explain it to him that you cannot afford any more.

If he truly was your friend and he truly wanted you to be there for the day of his demise, then he should not have a problem with it.
