I just had an ultrasound this past wednesday and was told the baby has dropped. I went to the grocery store today, and about halfway through the store, my back started hurting, and it just gets worse the more i move. I dont know if its just because i was walking alot and the weight of the baby caused it to start hurting, or if it could be back labor. The tech at the ultrasound didnt say which way the baby is facing, and i know if the baby is facing away from your back, you're likely to have back labor. It's my first baby, and i'm really sure how to tell when its labor or not, and with the pain in my back, could it be back labor? how long should i wait before i call my doctor? my water hasnt broke *which i know doesnt happen very often in pregnancy until they break it for you*, and i'm not having contractions. I lost my mucus plug way back in october when iwas in the hospital for a kidney stone. i dont want to worry myself and have it be a false alarm. what do you think it is?

doesn't sound like back labor... i've had it twice! it sounds more like strained muscles which are very tired by this point in the pregnancy. try to take it easy and watch the amount of activity that you allow yourself.

labor will present itself in many different ways, but most often a distinct pattern can be felt. you will *know* when it is real by the increasing intensity and the rhythmic cycle of contractions. back labor simply is felt more in the back than regular labor. it is quite intense!

water not breaking is not true in my experience either. mine broke both times rather abruptly! many doctors perform artificial rupture of membranes (breaking the water) to speed along labor. it is one of the many interventions that doctors perform routinely today.

best wishes for a safe and healthy delivery!

You will feel it in your back, not your stomach, and it will pull. But walking is good because it helps put the baby in position.
