When I had a Cavalier actually two different Cavaliers (1997 & 2001) always put the Christmas tree in the trunk. I never had a problem. I did just what you said and pushed the seat down.

A small tree will fit in the glove compartment. A medium sized tree will probably fit in the trunk. A large tree can be tied to the roof of the car.

Get out the measuring tape and figure out max height. You'll probably be able to get a 5 footer in there (they wrap it up so that the branches are compressed) if you put down the back seat. Otherwise, you could always tether it to the roof. If you want something larger, what's wrong with borrowing a truck?

I'd get the truck. Not only will it most likely not fit but it's going to leave a major mess to clean up in your back seat. You could always tie it to the roof using a blanket to protect the car's paint.
Good luck

My family used to do it all the time when I was growing up. Just tie the trunk down if it won't close all the way.

You could probably do ok as long as it wasn't a very big tree, but do you really want to risk getting sap on your upholstery? Use the truck!
