I've always wanted to buy my dad those make your own beer kits.. I also often buy him his favorite colognes (online). One of the presents he's liked best is a personalized silver plated business card holder (that fits in his pocket). I got that from personalcreations.com. You could also always get him a gift certificate to something, but that's so impersonal in general. Happy bday to your dad! :o)

if he is a drinker, a bottle of wine always works with my dad. If not, gift cards are the big thing now. And that way, he could get whatever HE really wants.

Last year I didn't have a lot of money so I scanned a bunch of pictures of us from when we were younger and bought a little photo album and filled it up with them. He loved it and can surely enjoy it for years to come.

get something that will be of sentimental value...do you have any "inside" jokes with him (jokes/words that only you two know what they mean?)...a picture frame that says DAD on it and a pic with you two...go to the store 'Things Remembered" they have items that can be engraved with things you want it to say....
