in standard metric SI prefix m, milli is 10^-3 so 1mg is 10^-3g such the same way that k, kilo is 10^3 so 1kg is 10^3 g.
In other words 1000mg = 1g, and 1000g = 1 kg or just like 1000mm = 1m, and 1000m = 1km

You are absolutely correct.

The metric prefixes are:
milli- = 1/1000
centi- = 1/100
deci- = 1/10

1000 thousandths = 1

Thus 1,000 mg does indeed equal 1 gram.
