Good question. This is a very common perception amongst most westerners. Like most countries, Indian society is also stratified into the destitute, poor, working poor, middle-class, and rich. The per capita income per person in India is just $3,100 per year. Please note that there are over a billion people in India and this income represents the net output of the economy divided by the population.
So, if you compare per capita incomes, India is somewhere in the middle amongst most countries. Due to the huge population, even though roughly 22% of people live under the poverty line, that works out to be almost 250 million people.
You can read more about poverty in India on the World Bank sources that I have cited. The second site has a "poverty report" for India and should give you in-depth information.
Hope this helps.

Hey Jasmeen,
I dont know which part of the world you live in now. I would agree with Tina. I have seen poorer people in the US and Europe. Poverty is on a bigger scale in India, yes. But what you will find here is warmth of the people despite their financial status. However, it is best that some places are avoided as is the case in any country. The good thing is you may find things much more affordable, yum food and warm people. What you might not find good are the roads and everything associated with it (transport). Hope this helps.

The poverty level in India is extremely high, so I suggest you take your indian butt back to India and leave us westerners alone. I little advise if you drink the water you'll end up crapping blood for weeks.
