Alexander means "Protector of mankind" which is both kind and strong. If you don't like Alexander then you could always go with Xander which is a form of the name and means the same thing.

Richmond (Teutonic) means Strong Protector, Guardian of the Poor. I think that would work!!

Gareth (or Garrett) means Strong, Gentle and is Celtic.
