They represent the gifts the wisemen brought to Jesus, but unfortunately have been commericalized so heavily that now people feel they must give gifts to one another to celebrate the birth. The three gifts the wisemen brought to the baby king were gold, frankinsense and myrrrrr. Not spelled correctly, basically spices and gold. They were paying "tribute" to the new king and acknowledging Him as a King, although they did not understand that He came to be the KING of all KINGS! Merry Christmas!
