take the world population. they didn't vote for the American president. Yet this same guy imposes his will to the world, leaving little place for compromise.
wouldn't that be a "world dictatorship"?

Right, there's no global democracy and a democratic government in a strong country can be a global dictator

Setting aside political views, I will attempt to answer the original question:

Since the world population is not ruled by a single government, but many, it cannot be considered to be one political entity. Thus, a "world dictatorship" is technically impossible. If however, the entire world was a democracy, then the "tyranny of the majority" would perhaps be a form of world dictatorship, for those in the minority.

However, because a democracy and an dictatorship are both mutually exclusive forms of government, strictly speaking it is not possible for one form of government to be both.

-It's perhaps worthy of noting that in the natural cycle of government, democracy often leads to apathy, which leads to dictatorship when the people stop exercising their right to govern themselves. So one is not necessarily far behind the other...

First of all: a dictatorship can be a good thing if the dictator is GOOD for his people!
Second: Strange as it may sound, but Adolf Hitler was elected in a democratic process.
Third: Democracy can be cheated at highest levels.
Fourth: Today we have what in America?

I think it's a thin line. The American president has tremendous influence throughout the world and can cause great hardship or great peace worldwide.
I'm sure there are many Iraqis (and others around the world) who view the current leadership as just a trade off one dictator for another. Thank God they only let them stay 8 years!

No it can not, We went to the UN before going to Iraq and we have a congress... so we do not have anything close to a dictatorship. as much as uneducated people like to say that GW Bush is a warmonger, nothing is farther from the truth.
Quite trying to instigate conservative bashing.
Questions like this need to be removed.. You obviously get your political leadership from "Entertainment Tonight" let me help you, George Clooney and Ben Afflack don't know whats best for this country, Just because you see them save the world on a sound stage with special effects.

And your problem with that is what? They want all of our money, medicine technology and they want it free. Dictating to the world? That is a bit puffed up. There are countries who never deal with us and do not get "dictated" to. You sound like all the other parrots on here.
GWB is the blame for: guys lost on Mt. Hood, Earthquake in Kafiristan, hungry children in Botswana. I doubt he has enough time to dictate.
But theoretically a benevolent dictatorship can, has and does exist. I lived in Spain under one with Franco. Peron was in Argentina, Qaddaffi was in Lybia.
So when you finish Bush bashing, go get some education.

Dictatorship can live within democracy, and dictatorship can over take democracy.
Democracy can not live within dictatorship. But can over take dictatorship. America has proved this.

i believe there existed, once upon a time, a tradition of "dictatorships" run by "philosopher-kings". a royal line of such consciousness level that, although their word was law, their reign benefitted all. these persons were not ruthless, clueless, ego ridden socio/psychopaths such as we have presenly ruling in many countries on the planet. perhaps they will return one day.

No it cannot.

America is a Republic touted as a Democracy. That is why it FEELs like we are being dictated to. So don't us America as a litmus test for Democracy.

a democracy is 'rule by the people' and a dictatorship is when one person has total control and there is no representation....i don't think one can be the other
