German teams were always good because of thier team work, not because of individual "Star" players, after all its a team game.
They had some excellent players nevertheless, I think Lothar Matthäus, was the best German player. Brilliant ball control, oversight, will to win and overall strength in various areas of the game. He could play in any position, scored goals, created goals and influences his fellow players.
Beckenbauer is overrated due to the media hype "kaiser" and all that. The opposition and game wasn´t as tight and top class as in Lothars day.
best striker, Klinsmann. Ive never seen a player who can jump so high and "hover" in the air.
best Goaly so far, in the world imo was oliver kahn.

I would have to say that this is a split vote. Beckenbauer is easily the best field player, but Oliver Kahn would have to be the best goalie (he did win the Golden Ball back in the 2002 World Cup, becoming the first goalie in history to do so).

Last time of course Franz Beckenbauer, Jürgen Klinsmann, Rudi Völler, and Gerd Müller were the best!
Right now, I think Michael Ballack, Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski are the best!
