Caribbean islands... it is not the poorest island in the Caribbean [Haiti is], neither is it the only island where drugs are prevalent....

So why the extraordinarily high levels of crime.. ?

Before people accuse me of being racist.. I am Black and my family are from the Caribbean [Antigua].. I am simply asking a question about Jamaica..

i've been around the caribean a lot, jamaica has about as much as haiti/ dominican rep. and several other islands.

True though, that St, johns (USVI) has low crime, so does St. Kitts. And Barbados. St. Lucia isn't bad.

But the poverty in jamaica is bad. mostly due to the policies of the International monetary fund and the WTO.
Jamaica got screwed when they took out a loan from the IMF and there were "conditions".

Hello.
My parents are from Jamaica, i have visited the island on a couple of occasions, and it is a beautiful country. To answer your question, Jamaica is the largest of the Caribbean Islands, so it stands to reason that the population is larger, so therefore you have more crime unfortunately.
Poverty is rife around the country, yes i know that is not a excuse but when people are desperate they turn to awful measures, consequently innocent law abiding people suffer.
Corruption amongst the government and law abiding agencies do not help.
That is where the problem needs to be looked at.

jamaica has crime mostly because of unempolyment so persons rob and kill to survive which is very unfortunate. all countries in the world has crime jamaica is no worse than those countries the government just need to provide jobs for the youth of this country so they do not turn to criminal activities then there will be no problem.

The myth that poverty causes crime is pervasive and widely believed, but untrue. It actually is the other way around, crime can cause poverty. As for Jamaica, I would look to see how much economic freedom they have there, and how much they have abandoned traditional morals.

you should go there in an election year, it scary! from what my ex husband says, they love the wild wild west. he told me that they had limited t.v. as a child and westerns were always on. I'm sure that's not the only reason but that's what he told me. the average Jamaican citizen does not have a gun, if you own a gun there you are considered a very bad person. the police show no mercy to you.
