That's a national insurance number not a tax reference number

The number you are giving is your national insurance number. Your NI number should be kept private as it can lead to fraudulent claims being made in your name.
Your income tax code will be something like 465L (this number would mean that you can earn 4650 pounds per year without paying tax).
Contact your local tax office - now under the name HMRC (Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs)
They will be able to look at the amount of earnings you have coming in and allocate you with an appropriate tax code.
