"Tit for tat" is just an old, old dialectical pronunciation of "this for that." It's the English way of saying the Latin idea of "quid pro quo."

That saying was actually made up by a former Hell's Angels biker named Willie. Willie had so many tattoo's that his nickname was "Tat".

So he coined the phrase "Tit for Tat". (And I'm getting my name legally changed to Tat next week, so don't lobby to change the expression, please!?)

Tit for tat is a corruption of "tip for tap," blow for blow, which first turned up in the 15th century.
