We are STILLl behind the iron curtain, because things that subversively and indirectly told us what to think and say about socialism & Russia and China during the Cold War are still there, as we have not had a collapse & transformation at all in the West.

However I am very sceptical if you are saying that we could get a fine for saying things like that in private or informally in the office. The day may still come when we have so little freedom of speech left, but thankfully it's a long way off (and we can always leave the country when it does come).

As I understand the regulations on age discrimination, it relates purely to employment in that it is illegal to discriminate against a person on the grounds of their age when, for example, they apply for a job or are considered for promotion.

I don't see anything there about references made by the general public derogatory or otherwise.

It is not illegal therefore to call someone an old fart under the regulations unless you are in limited circumstances within the workplace environment.

Equally calling a youngster an illiterate, uneducated, inexperienced little nobody who doesn't know what they are talking about is legal.

I hope this clarifies the law for you.

although i agree with the new law regarding age discrimination, it is almost impossible to police. however you can no longer call someone an old git, as you say, in a similar way you cannot use someone's colour, race, religios beliefs or sexual orientation as an excuse for not employing someone.
just be careful what you say!!!!!
