A friend suggested that the little brother never really existed, he was invented by the older brother to cope with the abuse... but I'm not sure, seen it a couple of times and still I've got nothing. Any thoughts?

I took a class in college on abuse and this movie was mentioned. The professor said that the younger brother actually died from the abuse (I know-sad) and the older brother had made up the travel around the world story in his mind to make the issue easier to mentally bear.

I haven't seen the movie in a long time but I think the younger brother really did exist and left on their makeshift glider and sent letters to the brother. Thats what I remember

The flying machine works--Bobby flies off, never seen again, but mother and brother get a postcard. Yet, there is some consideration that older Mike's story was a complete fabrication.
