I tried taking a welding class at a night school, and my very first day that I walked into the room I was laughed at by a bunch of guys. I was the only woman in the class, and people were constantly snickering at me. One day the teachers assistant came up to me and said "why exactly are YOU taking this class". And I said "dont worry I am not here in order to prove something to anyone". Then he said "ok that was all I wanted to know". This was very annoying because certain knowledge is usefull, and we are no longer in a traditional society in which men are willing to stop what their doing to help out a woman. Its only logical to try to gain those skills for yourself so you arent stuck later on down the road. Its a shame men have to make fun, or put pressure on women who just want to take care of themselves.

Some of them sure do get upset. I have worked "man" job quite a lot in my life and only some men are insecure about it.
If a women can do there job for cheaper then this hurts there pocket book. It is common knowledge a women gets paid less then a man for the same work. Or at least in some places I worked back then....Now it might be different.
not only this it is a macho thing...
BTW I am very happy staying at home taking care of the kids and the house now. I had to make a living same as them...same as you I bet?

I actually know quite a few women who get upset over women doing 'men's work'. Just part of the crazy, mixed up changing world we live in...

Some men are insecure. More and more men are getting used to it these days, though. A lot of women can't do extreme physical work, but a lot of men stay away from jobs that require brainpower. I'll take my brain over my muscles anyday.

Honestly it just depends on the guy. I know me being in the military, its hard for me to work with a woman because they are very limited to what they can do.. physically that is. I guess we just get upset about it because historically women stayed at home and took care of the kids and the guys went out and did the real work... and if a woman were to do a mans job it would just embarass te guy. and i think that just carries over to todays world as well.

They have been brought up to believe what women should do and what men should do and it doesn't agree with those values. They feel guilty about not doing it themselves. Their ego and feeling of need is making them insecure. However, there are men that want the women to do as much as a man and they admire it.

If women slowly started to do the same work as men then that would mean that men would slowly lose control over women. If women are dependant thatn they are not autonomous.

I think some men fear losing "their place" in society. Some guy even has a website called "Save the Males." Others may fear the additional competition for the work. Still some others may fear in the "little lady" hurting herself. Depends on the guy and his views/values as to why it upsets him.

Because men have to end up picking up her slack as a "team player" and watch her get paid as much as he does for his efforts. That's one possible reason that's especially true when physical strength is a requirement to do the job. But there are also some non-physical jobs that men just have a better aptitude for...such as drafting and so forth. If a man tried to iron his wife's favorite outfit for her and burned it up in the process, she'd be pretty pissed too.

Many of these kinds of men get intimidated easily. They compensate with very aggressive external behavior. Unfortunately there are way too many of them still...and they still control most things...very controling critters.
I must say though that many men are not that way. Some even call themselves feminists. My husband, as I am, calls himself a feminist.
This is another of MANY examples of the fact that sexism is alive and well here in the USA.
