He started the job in September at a bank and doesn't have sick leave yet. But I really can't imagine that they couldn't work something out so that he could be at home helping me (who is sick) and my 3 sick kids. Is there some sort of law about this sort of thing?

He might be able to request unpaid leave due to family emergency. There are some places that allow emergency paid leave for such situations, but I believe it varies by company (or state), so he would need to call and ask. Good luck & hope you all feel better soon!

Yes, he can call in. Just explain that he and his whole family are really sick. Any normal boss would understand and let him have a day off. Also, any documentation would be of help -- such as a doctor's note.

I once started a new job with other new hires. On the start day, one guy called in sick. The boss was compassionate and believed him and he started work the day after he was supposed to.

Use accrued vacation time.

Some corporations have policies where employees who are never sick can donate their sick days to other employees who need them.

Also, if you have a computer at home, perhaps your husband could telecommute, depending on his job. If he is background staff like Accounting ,et al. he could do his work at home while taking care of the babies. One of my firms used to issue laptops and set up a secure connection to the LAN at home so managers could telecommute while taking care of sick children.

If your husband was able to telecommute, he wouldn't have to use any leave at all.

No law. He's on a probation period. He can call in, but he might get fired. My 2 kids are sick right now, and I would LOVE for my hubby to be at home with us.

I recommend Day Quil. He can always go in and tell them he's sick, but I wouldn't call in.

If you absolutely need him at home then he can probably take some unpaid leave to help look after you but, typically, that's all that's available. He also runs the risk of not being taken on permanently at the end of his probation.
