It's called the Gilligan Effect.
Once the ratings go down the show will be cut and no one will ever know what happens to the poor castaways.

It is unknown yet. But from the last scene of the Season 2 finale, it seems that the island is hidden by some magnetic field or phenomena, so it's unlikely the rest of the world found the plane.
