When doing character studies of the human figure, round (heavier) bodies are easier to draw than slender bodies and while a 'happy' face may be more pleasant, an angry or intense face is more interesting. Try drawing your subject from a different angle than straight on, i.e. a face looking backwards over a shoulder; your subject looking up at the viewer etc. The placement of the hands can also add to the emotion of the character, hands shielding the eyes, or holding the head. Eyes and eye position can make or break the drama of a drawing. Study some of your favorite characters, paying close attention to the details.
Start with many thumbnail sketches, reworking your favorite ideas over and over and eventually the best character rendering will emerge.

Definitely all of the above and more. Every person experiences ALL emotions, and therefore every character MUST do so as well to become a fully developed and "real" character. I'm telling you this as both an artist and a writer. If you're asking what emotion is most appropriate for a single drawing to express the overall character, only you can know that. Make up a story. Put the character in a situation and see how they react. What's in the background? Who else is in the picture, or what is the character looking at that is outside the picture? What is he/she thinking? All these things affect the picture, most likely all at once.

So if we told you the character should be say, 'active', you would decide to draw it? How about YOU decide, since it's YOUR drawing? Wow, what a concept.

How about drawing a stressed lemming called Jennings ? He's stressed because of peer pressure but he doesn't want to jump off a cliff.

Ooh, interesting! Quirky, funny hair, warped smile, like the kind of person who smirks at a rude joke! Medium sized, skinny, knobbly knees and big shoes! Hope this helps!

Phychotically happy dude with a really big hammer and vibratingly active. i don't think there are enough characters who carry really big hammers.
Maybe wearing something in yellow with black or blue somethings on it(nature's warning sign)
hope that gives you something fun to go on :)
