Can he? Yes. When I hear the term "can" I think ability to do. So does he have the ability and the chance to win the NBA MVP? Yes. But will he win it, I don't think so. He doesn't play consistent enough to win it. In order to win the MVP you must be a solid player at all times. Let's take a look at past winners:

Steve Nash 04-05, 05-06
KG "Big Ticket" 03-04
Tim "Big Fundamentals" Duncan 01-02, 02-03

The last three players to win it are one thing - consistent. KG proved you don't have to be on the best perennial team to win it. But the year KG won the MVP his team did have the best record in the Western Conference at 58-26. Last Year, 05-06 season, Houston was 34-48. This season they're currently 14-8. So if he can propel his team forward and crack the upper crest of the Western Conference he'll get some mention in the MVP race. But it's hard to do that with T Mac out again (not his fault) with back spasms. No big can do it alone. Not even SHAQ could do it alone. Also the years Nash and Duncan won their teams had great records and went deep into the playoffs and Duncan won an Nba title.

No way.. he's no longer even dominant at his place, no longer to indicate being league MVP.. If healthful, yao averages what, 20 and 10? Too many different gamers in the league that are way too significant to their communities, and lead them a strategies.. Yao has little impact on the fulfillment of the rockets.. Yao=no longer mvp

It might be tough, since most MVPs are on top teams in the league. In order to win, Yao would have to lead the Rockets near the top of the West, especially with Tracy McGrady hurt.

He'll get mentions for it, I'm sure.

Yao, like so many other players, needs to have a decent, not great, but decent supporting cast. One of these people is T-Mac, if Tracy continues to get hurt, i don't honestly feel there is a chance. I say this because defenses will just key on Yao. When T-Mac is in the lineup, they can not focus on just Yao, they have to pay attention to the scoring threat that Mac imposes.

My final Verdict, with T-Mac yes
without no

yes, because in the way he plays right now, he shows that he's not a joke, cause before we see him just as another tall player but now he shows that he really is good, he has perimiter shots which he use when he is swarmed, and he's being consistent on his numbers and is becoming a good leader

No. Because he can never play good enough to win MVP.

I believe he will be a strong candidate but it’s hard to say if he will actually win. And also it’s too early to talk about MVP. I don’t even understand why the league does that. 22-25 games into the season everybody’s numbers are going to be up and a hand full of teams will have records that actually don’t reflect the type of team they will end up being come season's end! It’s what players do over the long haul with the wear and tear and the grinding of the season that I look at. If you are able to keep that up the entire season. Plus right now there are just too many good guys playing well right now to figure that out.

Here is my list of top 10 MVP candidates right now if the season ended today.

1. PG Steve Nash 20pts 3rbs 12 asst. At first I must admit I did not understand why this guy was going to get MVP for a second time last year. If you actually watch him the whole game you cannot even try to make your self think he is not the best. He makes that team go. All the guys you know about on that team are because of Steve Nash. You probably heard of them but not in the since of good players until Steve Nash came there. And boy can he take over a game; I have seen him many times take over a game through scoring, passing how ever. Plus his team has the best record out of all these candidates! What a coincidence!
Every team Steve Nash has been on the past 5 years has led the league in scoring, dating back to Dallas!

Note: Steve Nash has the highest % of shooting of all these candidates in every category. FG% 3PT% FT%

2. G/F Lebron James 26.4ppg 7rbs 6ast Lebron continues to put up big numbers as usual plus his team is leading the east. (Don’t look at wins look at winning % as of now because every team has not played the same amount of games) My prediction is that Lebron James will be only the second player in NBA history to average a triple double before his career over with. If not he will definitely come the closest because that is hard.

3. C Yao Ming 26ppg 10rbs 2 blocks (86% Free Throw) Yao Ming has improved every year. He is virtually unstoppable and he is more aggressive this year. With or w/o T-Mac he will put big numbers. Plus his team is 14-8 and would have the 6th seed in the playoff if the season ended today. Most likely the most "skillful" center you will ever see play.

4. SF Carmelo Anthony 31ppg 6rbs 4ast. Carmelo is having his best year to date and his team has a winning record of 12-8. Right now they would be the 7th seed overall. Carmelo also has gotten better each year and his shooting % is the highest of his young career at 50%.

5. G Dwyane Wade 28ppg 5rbs 8ast. D-Wade has gotten better in just about every statistical category every year since he has been in the league. He is the Heats go to guy and he has to be on the floor at all times for them to even think about winning especially with the decline of Shaq. He is the most clutch guy in the NBA right now. The Heat are 9-12 right now and would be the eight seed if the playoffs were to start today.

6. PF Dirk Nowitzki 25ppg 10rbs 3.2ast. Dirk is just a freak of nature. He causes match up problems for anybody in the league. In my opinion Dirk is actually having his best year although a little below the radar. Sure he has scored more in the past but this is his best year rebounding, passing and shooting statistically. Dirk can literally play 4 positions 2-5 at any given time and is a threat to have a big night every night. Plus his team would be the 4th seed now at 15-7. He is shooting the ball at a high level now but he is taking the ball to the basket more aggressively and putting in work on the low block!

7. G Kobe Bryant 27ppg 5rbs 4.5ast. Kobe Bryant can do what ever he wants when ever he wants. You want the ball in his hands at the end of games and right now he is making everybody on that Laker team better. There is really nothing else I need to say about this guy he is a proven winner and is willing to do whatever it takes to win another championship. The Lakers would be the 5th seed.

8. Vince Carter 28ppg 6rb 4ast. Vinsanity is at it again. This is his best year scoring, rebounding and shooting from the field. Vince is just as cool as the other side of the pillow. He still can fly but his out side game has become lethal and his ability to pull up is an added dimension. Although 9-12 New Jersey is at the top of their division and will make it to the playoffs.

9. G Joe Johnson 29ppg 5rbs 4asst. I remember watching this kid his freshman year at Arkansas and how good he was when he got drafted after that year. Joe Johnson is probably the second best all around player in the NBA next to Lebron James. This kid can flat out play. He can score at will, and create for his teammates. He causes match up problems because he can play 3 positions 1-3 at an all star level. He has improved in scoring every year of his career and this year he is shooting a career best 50% from the field.

10. G/F Paul Pierce 26ppg 7rbs 4ast Paul Pierce is of course just "Paul Pierce" he is the Celtics. He plays hard every night and without him the Celtics would probably go 0-82. He is the heart and soul of his team and he is becoming Mr. Clutch as well. He is like Burger King "Have it your Way" However you want it he can give it to you. In and outside, slashing, low post, high post, from the line he is truly one of the top players in this league without a doubt. He is having his best year rebounding upgrading another dimension to his game. Unfortunately Boston is two seeds out the playoffs and once again Pierce does everything.

On the border! PF Zach Randolph 25ppg 10rbs The big fella is at it again. Zach Randolph is emerging as one of the best power forwards in the game. His presence is felt on the low block and he can square up and hit the jumper. He has an unusual number of moves for a man of his size and can flat out score. He can spot up, he can post you and baby hook you, post you face and turn and score, or post you face up 1 quick dribble and get to the bucket. He is a force to be reckoned with. The only thing that hurts Zach is that his team is second to last in the western conference.

* G Allen Iverson 31ppg 2rbs 7ast. The only reason is not in the top 10 is because he is not playing now and we do not know were he will be and what impact he will have on that team. Iverson leads the league in scoring and is shooting a career best 89% from the foul line. Iverson plays hard night in and night out and he will bring energy to any team he plays for. Dude knows how to win but you can’t do it by yourself. He has been the best scorer in the league probably 6 out of the last 8 seasons. Unfortunately the sixers are a dismal 5-16 and although he has not played in their last 5 games they were 5-11 before his departure and their current 5 game losing streak!

Others:

Gilbert Arenas 28ppg 4rbs 6ast
Michael Redd 28ppg 3rbs 2ast
Kevin Garnett 22ppg 12rbs 4ast
Tim Duncan 21ppg 10rbs 3.5ast

* Player has know current team
