I don't have money for lessons but I would love to learn how to play the guitar.

Do you think I can learn to play through books/cd's/video instead of an instructor? Are there any particular ones you would recommend?

Okay- Yes and no.

It isn't difficult, but it can be extremely frustrating at first. I would first try to find a video instruction for the bare basics. You will want to have the fingering down and a little bit of dexterity built up before you tackle any songs or chord memorizations, and a video will do better to show you this rather than a book.

Second, I would get a poster (not a book) that shows all of the basic chords and start memorizing the fingering and lettering of each chord. You don't need to get all of them, but the more you have the better your stuff will sound. Once you have the chords down, go out and buy the Black Sabbath book. I suggest this book as a good "first" for people, because the songs are fairly easy to learn- but they aren't so simple that you don't learn anything. I also think that, because Sabbath ultimately invented metal, their style provides you a good foundation to start off with. It teaches you basic metal and a little bit of blues. Both of these are difficult styles and can be used in a multitude of other genres of music. Once you're through the book you will have soloing, rhythm, and lead skills to work with- that's when it gets fun. Time to experiment. Any Jimi Hendrix or Zepplin work would be good to practice with (or even Buckethead if you're really feeling ambitious). Clapton has some good material to work with too.

The most important thing though, even if you take none of my advice, is PRACTICE! Every day!!! ALWAYS put at least 1/2 hour in each day. Guitar is a fairly simple instrument to learn, but it takes a bit of patience. You won't rock at first- in fact you will suck at it for quite a while until you catch on completely (like anything else).

Good luck!

Learning the Guitar You need a course of instruction. The best way is with a private teacher 2nd would be class lessons 3rd regularly get together with other guitar players or if you absolutely will or can not do the above, Buy a book on how to play the guitar and follow it religiously. last would be to find some free online lessons and skip around in them doing what YOU think you want to do next. Guitar is one of the world’s most popular instruments. It is easy to take with you. It has a sound that people like. It can be use in almost any type of music. Almost anyone can learn to play it. Simple music is easily played after only a few days or weeks. You can continue to learn new and challenging music forever.

How long it takes to learn guitar depends on how good you want to get and how much practice you put in. How good you can get with 1-2 hours a day for a few months depends on what methods you use to practice. There are effective practice methods that will help you make the best use of your time. This course is one of the best. https://bitly.im/aMCkz It's not just about how much you play but how effectively you play that will determine how good you will get.

Find someone who can play and ask him/her to show you some things, i learned that way, i never would have been able to do it. Nothing like the personal touch! I had a couple of instructors i my day as well, and you learn a great deal from a professional like that, but to get going, try seeing if there are any groups that get together.

No, it's not too hard to play. My 2 sons taught theirselves to play. They went to the music store & bought the books. Buy yourself a guitar & I'm sure that you can learn.I don't really know the names of the books though. Sorry. Also, check online for books & CDs.

I learned on my own and didn't really use books and tapes. I basically learned for five basic chords A, G, E, C, D etc....most songs are those 5 chords. They're really easy to learn and if you learn those 5 then most songs will contain them. Try the web-site www.e-chords.com you can find the easiest of chords for songs and learn how to play those chords. Its simple but takes committment!

it's all about practice. even if you can't afford to buy a book or cd-rom just yet, pick one up and get comfortable holding it. find someone who knows how to play and ask them just to show you how to hold it. experiment with sounds. how does it sound when you hold this string down here, and pluck this one? how does it sound when you move your finger down the string or up it? and test the difference between strumming or plucking or picking.

let the guitar become an extension and get comfortable with which sounds come from which actions.

it's hard if you don't have the motivation.
but if you really want to learn, i think buying books/cd's/videos would be a great help.
