At the same time there's this hubbub over the President and his administration trampling upon American's Civil Liberties and Civil Rights, Democrats are not exempt from such trampling themselves by instituting smoking bans, trans-fat bans, and now in the U.K. they're considering a government mandate that obesity help line #'s be sewn in to clothing tags for the overweight.
Such mandates undermine private property rights and civil rights and liberties. So who do you think is a bigger trampler of these rights.

A little conscious and intelligent thought on this would be well received rather than the usual knee-jerk hate spewed ranting of a lunatic.

vote libertarian! Your rights end where mine begin. So smoke all you want, just not in my house, give me the info about trans fats stated simply on labels so I can make informed decisions, and harm yourself all you want! FREEDOM!

Democrats instituting smoking bans & trans-fat bans?! You are so wrong.
I assume that you don't like these bans. So since you don't like them, you blame it on democrats. These bans are have nothing to do with political partys. They are driven by community standards. I live in the reddest city of one of the reddest states (KS) where I'm like the only democrat in town. The republican controled city council just past a sweeping anti-smoking ban. Personally I think it's going a little too far but I guess I'm a minority in that opinion since just about everyone else supports it. So be it. But I also know that this isn't a republican scheme to control the way we live...this time. It's just what the anti-smokers (of both parties) want. PS: I'm a cigar-smoker.

very good point.

i don't agree with legislating healthy lifestyles, they should be encouraged but not legislated. however smoking bans i personally am for. the reason being is that when i'm in a restaurant or anywhere really i don't want to smell other peoples' smoke. this is not only a matter of my comfort but also my health. although i heard that in the uk they banned smoking in bars also (i could be wrong). in my opinion this is taking it too far, when i go to a bar i expect there to be smoking going on.

but to answer your question i'll respond with another question. what civil liberties are more important to you, your right to free speech, your right to privacy, your right to due process, etc. or your right to smoke where you want, your right to eat what you want, etc.

depending on where people sit on that question determines who is really trampling civil liberties.

Excellent question! I've been doing quite a bit of reading on politics lately, and YIKES.

How about the fact that it was the LIBERALS (Stevens, Souter, Ginsberg, and Breyer - Kennedy was the 5th vote, and he swings either way judicially) on the Supreme Court who said "eminent domain" is a good idea? Talk about screwing the little guy!

Here's some delightful irony that resulted from the Supreme's decision....a California businessman filed a petition to condemn a farmhouse that belongs to Souter to build a hotel. He wants to name the hotel Lost Liberty, and has plans to include the "Just Desserts Cafe".

As far as I know, most carcinogens are banned. I looked in my local grocery store yesterday and found not only plenty of tropical oils and cans of lard, but also carton upon carton of cigarettes! So I guess the ban you refer to is you not being able to smoke in the face of someone eating anymore. Sorry. Majority rules, I guess. Our smoking ban was on the ballot and it passed.

Have you ever heard of "cradle to grave dependency"?
Lets be serious the foods people are consuming with their high carbs, fats, and other chemicals are making people sick with a whole host of symptoms( heart diseases, diabetes, etc;) that are a billion dollar a year drain on Government health care dollars...but lets just ignore that right?

as quickly as we stop allowing them to. a good start to that's to no longer vote those corrupt criminals into workplace to start with. and that's for the two aspects of the isle, no longer one or the different.
