A Catholic priest named Father Ferdinand Verbiest has been said to have built a steam powered vehicle for the Chinese Emporer Chien Lung in about 1678. There is no information about the vehicle, only the event
The first production vehicle was the Ford Model T.
Henry Ford had an engine running by 1893 but it was 1896 before he built his first car.
Running by February, 1893 and ready for road trials by September, 1893 the car built by Charles and Frank Duryea, brothers, was the first gasoline powered car in America. The first run on public roads was made on September 21, 1893 in Springfield, MA

Well, Karl Benz (later to form Mercedes-Benz with Gottlieb Daimler) patented and demonstrated a working vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine in 1885, and began producing cars in 1888, but actually if we want to get technical, a working steam-powered automobile was invented in 1769 by Frenchman Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot, and the Brits had them by 1800.
I believe electric cars also pre-date Karl Benz's car.
The earliest self-propelled American car dates to 1804: apparently it was also amphibious!
Hope this helps.
