I don't find your question biogoted, the way other people are making it sound. Maybe I'm just not as sensitive, but I don't see it.
Yes, it's true that you made a rather large, broad generalization- not all gays and lesbians are attracted to those who look like the opposite sex. A lot of gay men love real manly men, and a good deal of lesbians won't accept a trace of masculinity in their women- they want full feminine gals.
But there are a lot of us who are attracted to the same sex, but has traits of the other. Why is that? Well, it's not that they want them to be the other sex, otherwise they'd be straight. What it comes down to is a difference between sex and gender. Sex is your biological sex- what ya got between your legs, and gender is how you look, dress, act, etc. Gays and lesbians necessarily are attracted to their same sex- lesbians love vaginas and gay men love penises- but not necessarily their same gender. They might like masculinity or femininity, on the sex of the person, whether or not it matches that sex. That's all it is.
And yes, you're right that if a heterosexual man liked women that were very manly, people would assume he had gay impulses- which is absolutely unfair. Nothing makes him gay unless he is sexually attracted to men- a masculine woman is still a woman.
Hope that helps!

Why is it that explaining THIS topic to certain people is like talkng to a brick wall?
I see so many posts on what attracts women to other women, and ESPECIALLY what attracts feminine women to butch or tomboyish women, and i dont understand the confusion here! It's not rocket science. Hell, its not even basic addition. It is what it is. Some women are more comfortable dressed non-feminine and some womed find that to be extremely sexy (such as myself) No I do NOT want a man. Nor do i want a woman who THINKS she is a man. Im not attracted to the male clothes, im attracted to the person as a whole. And if that person isnt into the whole girly pink prissy scene, then so be it!! So why is this so hard to understand?

Your question is very stereotypical, and therefore wrong. I am a gay man with very masculine traits and my boyfriend is the same. I am not attracted to sissy boys. But, that's just me. . ..just like in the straight world, people have their own idea of what's beautiful & sexy, so it will change from person to person. For the last part of your question, people will "assume" whatever fits their own agenda--be happy w/ who you are and don't give a second thought to others assumptions.

What people like in general is simply a matter of personal preference. People are attracted to the people who they enjoy being with the most. Why? They just do. Why do some people like the color blue? They just do.
And I agree, that your question implies a very broad and inaccurate generalization.

Many don't. My personal tastes don't tend to go in that direction: I like MEN. But that's just me. As to why: it's personal taste. Why do so many girls like Orlando Bloom as Legolas with the cheekbones and the long flowy hair? Would you assume these girls to be lesbians?

You are making a big fat generalization here, which could be taken as ignorant.
I have never liked feminine men - perhaps because I am a masculine man myself. To me, if I wanted a womanish person, I would sleep with a woman. [And I don't.]
Please think before you label "all" of anything one particular way.

you make a lot of generalizing, stereotypical assumptions, which tells me you don't actually know any gays/lesbians personally. you can't judge a book by it's cover....you have to read what's inside! if you open your eyes and get to know more of us, you'll find that the majority of us don't fit into those little "boxes."

That's not true. I know a gay female couple who are both very feminine. You've based your opinion on a stereotype.

Just because YOU feel this way doesn't mean EVERYBODY does. Not every lesbian is butch, and not every gay man is ultra-feminine.
