The best way to keep a teen's room clean is to clean it yourself when the teen isn't there, then nail the door shut.

How do I know? Hmm, the 2 teen daughters, 3 teen sisters (long time ago), 2 teen grandchildren (4 more soon to be teen), 1 teen brother, and a constant topic amongst friends and co-workers. I'm sure there are some neat freak teens who do keep a clean room, always an exception to the rule. But the majority - you might as well give up.

Set a good example throughout the rest of the house and just keep the kid's door closed. They'll figure it out eventually. Just make the rule that they have to do their laundry once a week and take food out of the room before they go to bed to keep the vermin out. Then back off and watch things slowly improve as the kid matures.

i don't know, maybe i'm just weird, but, i'm 14 and i'm practically obssesive over keeping my room clean, getting my homework done right when i get home from school, helping my parents, etc. some people call me cinderella but i LOVE to clean and have everything in order. i am kind of a perfectionist. however, my brother and sister don't like to clean but we get competitive so we all want to have the cleanest room. i guess it works out because my parents never have to tell me to do anything. also, i only get a $2 allowance every sunday. i don't usually like to spend it so i save it all. i'm thinking about saving it for a car when i get older because my parents won't buy me one. i don't have to worry about college though because my parents are paying for it and i don't know how much money they put into it but i put in about $1 a week for my college money. they say i already have enough money to go to an average college like a state college for 3 years so i think i have a good amount of college money.

As long as no food is rooting etc. leave it be, just shut the door. A young adults room is her/his private space and how it is kept reflects their individual personality. This is not a battle worth fighting, simply require them to close the door and keep any food items out of the room as well as dirty dishes.

Bribe them and then say that tell them thatnk you and that u did a good job... I am a teen and I would clean my room more often if my mom did that. Teens arent even looking for bribes as much as they do for appreciation.

Push rewards/ consequences. and also dont obsess about it , it just makes it worse. Get them to keep it to a point where its decent , not perfect. if u push them to perfection then theyll just want to clean it less. Also theres other things to be worried about so keep it in perspective. ok

i'm gonna go w/dr.obvious on this one. my parents just kept my door shut and when my room got so bad that i couldn't stand it anymore i gave in and cleaned it, that and embarassment of having any friends over will do it as well.
