Truthfully a laptop is a laptop. You have the following vendors to choose from at least on the PC platform:
Lenovo (IBM), HP/Compaq, Gateway, Dell, Sony, and Toshiba. The first four have established product support structures specifically for computers that are well known. While the latter two have general support structures.
Lenovo, HP, and Gateway are ore specific to the computing industry. Dell is specific to baseically generalized electronic devices which includes every electronics product line they can get their hands on.
It's not so much in the laptop but in the support offered by the company. The question you ask is to vague. What you should do is select specific models and than look at reviews between the models or ask questions.

That honestly depends on what you want to do with it. Both are bulk produced computers. Sonys are ridiculously over priced. You can probably get two Dells for the price of one Sony (You'll need them) that does the same thing. I honestly have never had a problem with any laptop I ever purchased. Some Dells run a lot hotter than others so it really depends on the model and your needs. Low budget go with Dell. A glutton for punishment and want to impress the geeks go with Sony. Just don't drop either one because they both rot to high heavens in the opps department.

It depends on what you want and how much you are willing to spend.. I would buy sony for:
1. Better design
2. Wow inspiring finish
3. Great screens
I would buy Dell if I wanted
1. A higher spec
2. lower price
Sony's are Sony's!

Hello!!
Sony is simply the best. It is cost effective, cool quality and eligant design, cool processor and the best thing that you wont ever need to use your warranty to repair it.
Dell is cheaper than sony, but the built quality is not in comparison to that of sony's. Sony has got quality.
If you want fast processing, go for acer ferrari 3400LMi. I wont ever recommend IBM to any one, not even my enemy, its the worst laptop i have ever seen. I have got very bad experiences with IBM. Everysecond day i needed to go to the service center because of some problem or the other.
Thanks
Vishesh
