I would like to use a router at the main computer.

for gaming get a lan cable and run it between the 2 pc's directly, if you need a router to access the internet and it only has 1 port then you will need another network card, or you could use the additional ports on the router if it has more than 1.

You can either:

1. connect both computers together using an Ethernet Crossover cable. A standard patch cable will not work for this type of configuration.

2. you can buy a small Ethernet switch for around 35 dollars. You'll want to look at the throughput for the switch. The higher the number of packets the switch can handle the better. Switches are designed for better packet handling than hubs.

hook an ethernet cable into one computer, run it to the router, ethernet cable in the other, run it to the router. You are now networked.
