I am considering the Samsung 225bw and the ViewSonic vx2235wm. Is there any significant difference or is it only preference?

Is there another monitor in the same $400 price range that you would recommend?

It really comes down to preference- if you can find a store that carries them both (like CompUSA), go take a look in person and see which you prefer. It's not really possible to decide between monitors based on spec alone, you gotta see the image quality.
I've had good luck with Viewsonic in the past, but lately people are saying their monitors lose sharpness after a couple of years- haven't seen that myself, yet.

My other recommendations to look at- the Gateway FPD2275W and Dell 2007WFP (Dell has kiosks in malls nowadays). I have the 19" widescreen LCD by Gateway and it's excellent. A couple of reviews on Amazon said the FPD2275W has backlight bleed problems at the edges, so check carefully for that.

My boss has a Dell 24" widescreen and its the best flat panel I've ever seen, so I'd certainly recommend looking at their 20" model.

I'd stick with the Samsung. ViewSonic used to be real quality, but as of late they have started to slip. Last several I've gotten from them are blurry.
