my lovely wife (god bless her soul) has just left a towel used to soak up spilt milk in the washing machine for 2 days. the milk of course took this chance to start and go sour.
when i got home after 2 days when i had to work away from the home i came back to the most delightful smell in the house as you can imagine.
the smell is now away from the house after leaving the windows open all day and night but as luck (or lack of it) would have it the washing machine is now reeking and anything washed in it ends up with a nice sour milk smell.
how do i get rid of the smell without having to get rid of the machine?i think if we run a wash with no cloths in it it night take care of the little problem. would this work? please dont suggest getting rid of the machine as it is only a few months old.

I would suggest running it through a full programme on the Hottest possible wash with nothing in it.You could also try one of those dishwasher cleaners...emptying into the soap dispenser and then running through a hot programme. Good luck...there is nothing worse than the smell of stale milk...(PS..I'm a domestic God!!!)

Above suggestions of vinegar, bleach, and soda sound good.

But it took two days for the milk to 'do its thing' and you might have to run the washer on empty a few times to really get the stink out.

After using the above, follow it up with a cycle using detergent so that the harsher smells of bleach and vinegar lessens.

Empty a bottle of white vinegar into the dispenser drawer set the machine on a wash cycle. That should remove the smell with the added bonus of cleaning hard water deposits from the pipes.

It has already been said but I'll just second it, use vinegar. Vinegar is an amazing cleaner and helps get rid of bad odors. Run the washing machine with no clothes and use a bottle of vinegar instead of detergent.

Indeed. Run a load without clothes on the hottest cycle you can. Also, run 3 cups of white vinegar during this load to help neutralize the odor. Should only take 1 cycle this way. GOOD LUCK!!!

Try vineagar first,if that doesn't do it a cup of bleach will work just make sure to run 2 cycles so the bleach will come out and not ruin your clothes later Good Luck

Purex or vinigar will clean up the machine. Its your wife who needs some work done on her. Is her nose clogged. Has sinuas trouble. Just lazy. she left you after dropping the towel in the machine. Making a statement of some kind. Like my life stinks. Better get some help for her, your marriage and yourself.

Milk tends to 'grow', so I suggest you run a hot cycle, but add a cup of bleach in the dispenser drawer, so it flushes out the pipes as well.
