Sad but true .... i'm indian and my father too didn't want me as I was a girl - the result - my parent's divorced. However, I'm lucky that my father was unaware of a 'sonography' as he'd have got me aborted before I was born.

I'm still alive, consider myself fortunate in a way as my mom would have been very lonely otherwise.

Not all women are as strong willed as my mother was. Many are brainwashed into believing that daughters are not worth it and that they have no other option but to cooperate in getting them aborted or killed...

they dont see the option of walking out of a marriage to save their daughters as they don't believe that is possible....

and there's a lot of pressure to produce only sons.

Part of this is the huge dowries that are required to get husbands for their daughters. Boys on the other hand will be the breadwinners and will bring in dowry. .. so the worth of a child is estimated on the basis of the economic returns that child will potentially bring into the family in the future... and this is particularly so in the poorer sections of society....

It is a sad but true fact....hope some day things will change

Are the parents not punished in that situation? I read that article you linked, it's absolutely horrible. How could they do such a thing? If you think about it, it's just the way their culture is, they "worship" their sons, i guess. I must admit I don't know much about it, but I was not aware of all that the parents were doing. They have to be stopped. This is so sad. Poor innocent little girls... : (

These parents definately were not Buddhist, for buddhists do not ever kill, nor harm in any way, any living thing, especially human beings (Most of all, their own children) !! Never, has their been a war, even - in the name of Buddhism.

It is so very sad to see any life taken, killed - no matter what the reason. Every human being should live by the principle of No-Harm to all living beings, especially human beings !

Life is valuable and precious. And all of humanity should have respect, and dignity for all life.

I think that the parents should get death penalties too! Who in
their right mind would kill their own children?!? Just because their
children are girls doesn't mean that they are worth nothing!
Some countries don't give women a lot of rights you know.
The parents need the death penalty because that is outrageous!

Learning about these killings boggled my mind and I cannot think straight right now. What madness has driven these heartless parents to kill their children, is it perhaps the consumption of curry that deranged their brain?

that is so sad. it's just like in china where girls are considered inferior. the parents could at least give them up for adoption instead of killing them.
