No, the paper is rolled up very very tight indeed! Then it is pushed through a wormhole in the electric cable. This is very small, and very long. But, thanks to the wonders of sub-atomic physics, it is- simultaneously- of almost no length! So, as you push the paper in one end, it emerges simultaneously from the other end.

Some people have tried to investigate whether sexual acts could be carried on at a distance using the same medium. Unfortunately the 'rolled up very tight' feature is a marked disincentive. It is, therefore, almost always just paper that is pushed in!

The paper doesn't travel at all. The file is converted to a bitmap. That's a string of 0s and 1s which contain an 'image' of the thing you are FAXing. At the other end, the FAX machine converts those bits back into a picture of the document which it normally prints. Some FAXes, however, are stored in these bitmaps to be read and printed later as necessary for the recipient.

It has the moisture sucked out the paper and this shrinks it to travel along the phone lines, At the other end there is a small water tank in phone, which is constantly refilled by moisture from speaking on the phone in general. (from spit in your gob!) This water tank then restores the paper to original size. But please be careful with water and electricity as they don't mix well. Buy the japanese type fax as it has extra large tank!!!

The fax turns it into a supersonic paper airplane, which somehow unfolds itself at the receiving end.

The machine rolls it up very tightly so it will pass down the wire. Now explain what happens when you get drunk at the office party and fax your bum to your rival firm.

... are you serious?

alright I'll add to this ...
the paper is being scanned and transferred into digital signals that are being sent through the phone lines to the destination fax machine where the signals are being interpreted into text and printed out.
