i am supposed to be getting her album for my sisters christmas present but i have no idea what style of music she does which means when i go into a record shop i dont know which section to look in

Very classy singer. Laid back mor. Featured on Radio 2 during the summer Madeleine Peyroux (not being picky, trying to help) for the correct spelling. If you have Limewire or similar you can download her stuff.
