...who is unable to complete his term?

Of course I'm referring to South Dakota's Senator Johnson, a Democrat who the governor will replace with a Republican if he's unable to return to Washington. I'm not talking party preferences here. Just as a general rule, either way, shouldn't the replacement be required to be of the party the people voted for?

I think it's a shame that it could determine power in the Senate, but the answer isn't that simple. Just because a Democratic is elected senator doesn't mean ANY Democrat will do. People don't always vote along party lines. Maybe it should be the outgoing senator that should have a vice senator.

Every state handles it differently. No worries though. The Senator will be fine : Legally he can only be replaced if he resigns or dies. So, if neither of those 2 happen the governor cant replace him. Even if the senator never makes it to single senate session. It has happened in the past.In fact a Senator from South Dakota. I can not remember his name. he made 1 session and never returned.

i suspect that the theory is the people voted for the individual not the party. Their state law determines how that person is replaced.

Good question, however I think that is the way it is going to be so we should learn to accept it and hopefully it will not come back to haunt us like the appointment of George Bush has.

Unless there is a constitutional amendment to the individual state, no.
