I eat a healthy diet, hardly any processed foods, lots of carbs protein and fruit and veg, but should I take a pregnancy multivitamin supplement anyway? Would it help and if so, in what way?

I have heard that Vitamin C will help the cracked lips as well. I was taking vitamins up until this last year. I have a high level of calcium so I had to give up my calcium supplements, which are also in a multivitamin. I would like to take a one a day vitamin, but need to check with my doctor to see if there are any that has a very low dose of calcium or none at all. I was taking the generic for Centrum Silver. Walmart and most pharmacies have an equivalent for that brand. I also take Flax Seed Capsules daily.

Yes. Some vitamins are aided by each other in absorption, such as vitamin c and iron. Also, no matter how well you eat, your body will take all the vitamins the baby needs from you. A multi vitamin simply helps you to make sure you have enough for the baby and yourself. Think of it as an inexpensive insurance policy for good health for you and the baby. Also, consider taking a DHA supplement. DHA is known to be as important as folic acid now, but it is mostly found in fish, which you can't eat a lot of during pregnancy. There's a great vitamin/DHA pack called Optinate.

Yes! they are so important!

• The fetus gets all of its' nutrients (including vitamins and minerals) from the mothers diet, nutrients stored in the mothers bones and tissues and some nutrients made in the placenta. The placenta aids in transferring nutrients, hormones and other substances from mother to baby. Nutrients found in the food consumed by the mother are needed for the placenta to perform these transfers.

• The increased needs of the mother and fetus sometimes make it difficult to obtain enough of the required vitamins and minerals from the diet alone

Folate, also called Folic acid, is a B vitamin and is important for both men and women. However, it is even more important for women of childbearing age or women planning to have a baby.

Folic acid is important for many body processes and is very important during the first trimester of pregnancy. At this time the baby's spine and brain form. Folic acid is crucial in cell multiplication and red blood cell formation. A diet deficient in folic acid has been linked to birth malformations know as neural tube defects.

You should take your multivitamin. A healthy diet may be supplement enough on a regular basis but during pregnancy the fetus is drawing vitamins from everywhere to grow. If you have a specific vitamin deficit the baby may not grow and develop normaly.

I am a Dietary Analyst and look at vitamin and mineral levels in people's diets. Even people who think they eat really healthily are typically deficient in at least 2 vitamins or minerals, and that's before I take into account their personal absorption or factors such as pregnancy.
The need for many vitamins and minerals increases during pregnancy and even more during lactation. For example, if you are deficient in iodine (which 90% of my clients are) it can cause mental retardation in the child.
You should take a pregnancy multivitamin during pregnancy, and consider an essential fatty acid supplement if you don't regularly eat oily fish.

YES YES YES!!! your body is now sharing EVERYTHING with that baby...including all of your vitamins and minerals. Sure, you may be getting enough of all of your vitamins, but baby needs those, too! Prenatal Vitamins give you an extra boost of vitamins, as well as other things that you can't get good doses of in normal foods...such as folic acid. Most doctors don't give you a choice, so you definitely need to start taking a prenatal asap!

Yes! They are a godsend! I took pre-natal vitamins during my whole pregnancy and watched what I ate (but ate a little too much) and my son was born perfectly healthy, he weighed 9 pounds 8 ounces and was 22 inches long!
If you don't put enough vitamins into your diet, especially calcium, the baby will take what it needs from you. Happy Pregnancy and congrats!1 ;))

Yes you should take a pre natal vitamin cause you need more minerals and vitamins when you are preggo for your baby, especially folic acid which has been shown to reduce neueal tube defect such as spina bifida. You also need way more calcium in pregnancy cause your baby's bones are forming a nd hardening.

yes, not all the vitamins and minerals we need are in "healthy" meals, and with a baby, you need 2x as much nutrition... definetly go for the vitamin.
