You didn't mention how much you had to spend so scale this accordingly. The mother-in-law and sister-in-law would probably appreciate a gift card for a Day Spa ... it could be for nails or more depending on your budget. These are available at COSTCO and work at spas around the country - two $50 cards for about $75 as I recall. And, the local spa is always willing to do a gift certificate. It is the kind of gift that lets them choose the details (nail color etc.) but shows that you took some time to pick out something for them. I don't know about your father-in-law but mine loves home made Toll House Chocolate Chip cookies with a nice bottle of Scotch - easy gift. Ask your husband if that would work for his dad.

If you need to scale this down, make up day spa style baskets for self-pampering - french manicure is usually a safe pick. Nice soaps etc are inexpensive luxuries. Your father-in-law might appreciate a bottle of white wine with sausage, cheese, and crackers.

This year the ideas listed above will help. However, next year seems to come along - again and again-- smile!

Ask them this Christmas after opening/while opening what their favorite Christmas entailed. Ask them what gift they have enjoyed best over the years.

I have done that in the past and heard many good 'gift' ideas.
Many of them (no one in their own family knew!)

I like to give older folks fruits and flowers. They enjoy eating them all year long. It can even be a little fruit/nut basket that you promise to deliver once a (month/quarter/some time) during the year.

For mother-in-law and sister-in-law, spa/salon packages are excellent gifts. Father-in-laws usually love gift cards to sports stores (*****'s, Sports Authority, etc)

Women are easy. Any type of lotion bath set would work or some type of household or christmas decoration. They have really cute candle and scented oil decorations at like Bath and Body Works/White Barn Candle Co. Now men are a diffrent story. Does he like sports you could get him something from his fav sports team. It might be easier getting a guy a gift card unless you know some of his likes.

Unless they have a medical condition that prevents it, rather than driving myself completely crazy trying to figure out who wants what, then trying to actually find it, I just get a nice little box of candy, cookies or other christmas treat, then attach a nice gift card or gift check. Then, they can buy what they want, at their leisure.

Depends on the mother-in-law. How about sour balls in an expensive glass container with a gold plated nut cracker.
