Shaving cream has moisturizers and it DOES soften skin and prevents irritation.. Have you tried shaving without the shaving cream? Your skin will be totally dry and itchy and have red spots after because the blade is stripping away part of your skin's surface that causes irritation and the shaving cream prevents just that. But it also tells you the area that you already shaved so it works for double purpose which is way better!

It is meant to keep your skin moist so there is less friction and irritation from the blade. If you wet your skin with water and apply shaving cream the cream hold the moisture longer than if you had just used the water alone. Usually shaving creams also contain lubricants to further reduce the friction.

lol, though I use it mainly for the second, it is supposed to help. Depending on the shaving cream it can do different things, but mostly it's to prevent razor burn or annoying cuts caused by a not-as-sharp-as-it-used-to-be blade. You can get them with different vitamins and moisturizers to continue to soften the skin, as well.
