1. 55% of 80 girls means there are 44 girls{(80 x 55)/100}
2. from that 1/4 are left hand girls. that means 11 girls are lefthanded.{(44 x 1)/4}
3. so there are 36 boys in the class. (80 - 44 = 36)
4. from that 1/3 are left handed means 12 boys are lefthanded.{(36 x 1)/3}
5. so there are total 11 + 12 = 23 students are left handed.
6. from that probability of a boy being left handed is 12/23.
hope this helps.

80 students. 55% are girls, it means 45% are boys,
Boys = 0.45 * 80 = 36 boys.

1/4 are lefthand. = 20 students of all are lefthand.

1/3 of boys are lefthand. = 1/3 * 36 = 12 boys are lefthand.

if pick one stud. what is probab. of?
The probability to get 1 lefthanded boy is 12/80 * 100% = 15%

There are .55*80 =44 girls and therefore 36 boys
(1/4)(44)=11 girls are left handed
(1/3) (36) = 12 boys are left handed
So there are 12 chances out of 80 that a left handed boy will be picked. This is a 15% probability.

That means 45% are boys , or (45*80)/100 = 36.
Now if 1/3 of boys are lefthanded, that means 12 are.
So, probability is12/80, or15%.

In probability, "or" gets a +, while "and" needs a x, therefore the probability of a left handed boy shall be:

since 100-55=45 and

since 1/3 x 45=15

then 45% x 1/3 = 15% Q.E.D.

By the way, thanks for making me automatically know that 55% of 80 is 44 and that 45% of 80 is 36....and 15% of 80 is 12. For a bonus, if you want the probability of a left-handed girl, it shall be 11/80...which is 13.75% !!

45% of 80 is 36 boys.

1/3 of boys are left handed = 12 boys

12/80 = 15%

80.... 100%
x ........55%
x = (80 x 55) : 100 = 44 students

1/4 de 80 = 20 lefthand
1/3 de 20 = 3,3%
probab of lefthanded boy 20%

Watch your wording...you say "if pick one stud. what is the probab of? that student is a left handed boy?" If your told you must pick a boy its 1/3 or 33.33% rather than 15% if you randomly picked a student say out of a hat. Check the wording on the problem it may be a trick question.
