So many people consider themselves to be unique, free thinking and independent. Yet if you examine their lives, their habits, their activities and their beliefs, you often can find they have modeled most of it according to Hollywood Movies and TV programs. Few of us develop unique thoughts, talents and abilities. What do you think? Do you think you DONT do this? If so describe how you are different. But be careful because I will challenge you.

I'm not talking about changing movies to madel life as it is. I am talking about people, and that includes many people, who model their lives according movies and TV. Get the difference? Often people take their cues in life from these things instead of finding that within themselves and others. I enjoy watching movies and TV as well, in fact quite a bit as a medium of entertainment. Not speaking against that at all. I love it!

I'm usually in between. Not totally unique but not exactly like those in movies and on tv. I have noticed that the media is getting more crude, violent, and sexual and do not like it at all especially with a young child around.

Everyone is unique, and no one is unique. Everyone is unique because every person has a specific identity, and no two people are exactly alike. No one is unique in that the world existed and progressed before their existence, and it will go on after it. Also in order for a civil society to exist, there must be recognized norms (clothes, hygiene, goals, etc.), and some form of cultural homogeneity (pop culture, religion, etc.). If every person was a true individual, there would be anarchy. I would also question who is modeling whom. Like the earlier guy said, society affects art, more often than the other way around. Hollywood doesn't exist in a vacuum; typically its movies are based off of either society itself or our social norms and values. Conversely art never truly represents society. I'm convinced that if film accurately portrayed the contemporary mundane lives of ordinary Americans, no one would watch. Movies and TV are meant to be an escape from ordinary life-do you really want to watch a movie where litterally nothing exciting happens? Humans are inherently social creatures; even when we rebel to conformity, we just end up starting a new trend.

No one who watches TV can be unique! TV itself has shows, films of unique people so why bother? even a person who doesn't watch it will have friends who does, and sooner or later will be effected by them.
But lets say it this way, IF we consider TV as the biggest provider for "popular culture" (what is popular culture? is another Q needs to be answered) Most people live according to it. If you are not living in the countryside or in a country that's far from popular culture or just too poor...Any way. We go to the movies that we see their commercials or programs about them. we buy our mobile phones, laptops food etc from commercials. We dress like or favorite star and the list goes like this. "basically we consume (or live) as we see. A person should really spend too much effort not to be effected. When you think deep you see that your dreams, your hopes from the future are sometimes so similar to the rest of the state! Why could that be?.... A fellow who lives in a deserted little island for 30 years could be living a unique life but the image of him in our minds right now is too far from being unique. (I am thinking of a tiny land with a single coco-not tree and a thin man with a long beard :) )

Well, looking at it from the other direction, I've never seen a character on tv or movie that I thought reflected my life at all. I am a Christian, so my life doesn't revolve around partying and getting drunk like a lot of movies show that my age group is all about. I see characters that say they are Christians, but they aren't. They are nothing like me and my friends. I've never really seen a good representation of what Christianity means to me. The closest was Shepherd Book on Firefly.

I'm sure there are characters that have some of the same qualities as me, but personally, I'm even weird amongst my friends. They will all tell you that. I don't do things the way they do. I don't like the things they like.

The times that I relate most to a character is when that character is an alien. Like a Superman show, or Roswell... That feeling of being different and not being able to fit in quite right, needing to hide things about myself...

I am not quite brain dead yet, so...I model my life after most vampires and werewolves in Eastern Siberia (that would be in Asia for those of you WHO are brain dead to due movies and t.v.) and on occasion, I take in a few conferences with the head werewolves, you know..talk about the financial stock market, what's new in the latest fur designs...and....are British people good to eat, for breakfast

Well, Art sometimes imitates life which is the opposite to what you are asking.

I think it would be difficult to models ones life on tv movies/characters unless one had a lot of money!

Maybe not "unique," but definitely not according to movies and/or TV progrmas. My role modes come from real life; my mother, pastor, friends and others I have met.
