40 years ago I felt the same as you just wrote. Not much has changed except its gotten worse. Last year a lot of the stores wouldn't even say the word Christmas. Because the word is Gods name Christ and mas means the church service that years ago most Christians celebrated. Nativity sets are off limits. They are trying to dispose of all reference to Jesus the Christ of God. So the spirit of Christmas isn't being made manifest in many ways. Songs celebrating anything except a deer with a red nose etc. might offend some people. So we do not hear the old Christmas carols. Just a holy joly Xmas. Reminds me of when Russia closed their churches during the Stalin years. Sad.

Well, since we can't talk about anything that has to do with religion because people will be offended.... of course all that is left is the gifts part. I am not a religious person, but I do remember the origins of Christmas, and try to not concentrate on gifts. My father is in the hospital right now, and his room is next to the pediatric ICU, if you ever want to see the true meaning of Christmas, go visit some sick kids who still believe in miracles. I try to be as cheerful and happy towards others this time of year, and I find it to be contageous. I hope that you have a very merry Christmas and find that warm feeling in your heart again.

I agree. I am the office manager here at work and I always try to decorate a little, and the people say to me that I only do it because I have kids, and that they don't feel the decorations will change the way they feel about the holiday.
I know that for me I love the holidays, me and my husband and 2 teenage kids try to volunteer every year at the battered woman's shelter. Usually my kids are in the nursery with the little babies, and they love it. They help them get in line, since most of them don't walk yet, and they help them get on Santa's lap for pictures. But some how after we leave them they are sad because they know this is the children's home. and they know they don't have the things we have. They always want to take the kids home with us. We are not at all wealthy, (not even close), but they do know that we have more than most people do.
There will always be Christmas in my house. I think there will be some sort of sadness as well.

The spirit of Christmas has gone the way of commercialism. Retailers are out to make a buck and start putting up Christmas stuff before Halloween. By the time Christmas DOES finally arrive, everybody is so burned out by the constant overwhelming "holiday spirit" they are ready for Christmas to be over with already.
The important thing to keep the holiday spirit alive is to have traditions. I look foreward to Christams because of things like family getting together and the anual "Chistmas Pajamy-jam!" We all get Christmas Pajamas on X-mas Eve and take a funny photo or two... some of us younger folks go out to a local bar in our Jammies and talk and laugh. It's fun!

How about if you call your local Charities and see what they made need over the holidays -- and given that -- it may be something as simple as volunteers to feed those who have little or are without at this season for a Christmas Meal.
VOLUNTEER for these events, share some staple (boxed/canned) foods and take them to a food bank, bring clothes that you no longer wear to the Goodwill or other charities, and
just take a good, hard look around you and think about all the BLESSINGS in your life.

Well you sure are write! I think Christmas has gone to Zellers and Wal Mart! LOL - I have for years, refused to spend at Christmas, waiting for Boxing Day, when you can triple your money! I try and help my neighbours who are alone, and I try to remember that at this time of the year, more lonely people commit suicide then any other time of the year. So if you have a friend, who is alone, don't let them spend Christmas Eve alone, the more the merrier! Merry Christmas.

The spirit of Christmas has been buried by greedy retailers and droves of people who refuse to believe that Christmas is not all about presents and parties.
You should volunteer. Make the time, it will be so worth it. You won't regret being a part of someones day who will truly appreciate your gift of time.
