For many grad programs, the main part of the program is writing a thesis or dissertation. These are not graded. You write the long detailed research essay under the guidance of a professor. Then when the professor agrees that you have done a good job, the work is submitted to a committe of 3 to 5 other professors. They have to approve it and then you have an oral defense. Then you are finished.

Most programs also require you to take a certain set of courses where you are graded A, B C F. For most graduate schools a C (70-79) would not be considered good enough for credit towards a graduate degree. So you might have to take that course again.

There are more than 1000 graduate schools in the USA and they all have their own rules, and often the rules vary between different departments of the same school. So, you would have to check the details of the rules in the exact school you wanted to attend.

the ones my daughter took had a total of 200 or 300 and she passed by reaching the complete 200 points or 300 points to pass the class, course which ever applies to your situation. so she missed passing science by 15 points she got a 185 and has to retake that test. (:
