There are two methods to determine the baby's gender :
1. Ultrasound : Usually, an ultrasound can determine gender around 18-20 weeks. This is the most common method and has little side effects.
2. Amnio or CVS : Amnio/ CVS can detect a lot of things and gender can be conclusively determined from such a test. Amnio is usually scheduled around 16 weeks, and CVS usually takes place around 10 weeks. The downside to these tests is that they carry a small risk of miscarriage.

Most people don't get an ultrasound until about 20 weeks and you can usually tell then. I was a high risk mom because of my work in the lab with teratogens, so I was ultrasounded every other week. We could tell at 18 weeks that we had a boy.

PS. Aminos are a sure bet but CVS can be difficult. The rate of maternal cell contamination is higher so if the fetus is male, we know for sure, if the fetus is female, there is the question if we acually got baby cells or just a lot of mom cells. The doctor is really important when getting CVS.

I think the earliest is 17 weeks---but most people dont get their firs sonogram until they are 20-23 weeks just to get a better result.

it depends on the baby...it can be as early as 13-14 weeks, up to close to 20. the more well developed the baby is, the more accurate the sex detection will be.

14-15 weeks, but its not very accurate. The penis and testicals look just like the vulva and lips of the vagina until about 18 weeks. So its usually a 50/50 that early... although no always.

Not sure about weeks (you are making me do math!!) but about 5-6 months you can get a sonogram done to tell. Definitely at 6 months that is when I got mine.
