Humans have approximately 2-3 x 10(13) red blood cells... depending on the size of the person and the location of residence and other variables of course.

In general, erythrocytes can produce approximately 2 million cells per second or 2 x 10(6) under ideal conditions.

One quarter of, lets say, 2.5 x 10(13) cells is 6.25 x 10(12). To replace these cells, without taking into effect injury response, would take approximately 36 days.

If you look up blood-donation websites, you'll find out that they mention the typical, average person to hold between 10-12 pints of blood and during a typical blood donation run, the individual usually gives up 1 pint of blood. Likewise, they claim that the person will recover blood (which is made up of a ton of components such as red blood cells, white blood cells including B cells, T cells, macrophages, natural killer cells, blastocytes, granulocytes, platelets, etc.) in about 8 weeks through stem cells in your bone marrow.

Your body also has to recover lost plasma (the yellowish solution that holds all the components of blood) and most of the plasma is just a mix of water absorbed through the intestines with a lot of other proteins.

...blood is measured in liters, not pounds, and if you lost a liter of blood, you'd be dead a few times over.
