The bear is sentimental, but forgot to remove the batteries and one of the AA batteries corroded onto the contact. It's rusty. How do you clean the contact to remove the corrosion?

use baking soda and water to make a paste and spread it over the tray. brush it around with an old toothbrush to absorb the battery acid and wipe up with paper towel or sponge. then use sandpaper, emery board to scratch the rust off and blow out the debris. the baking soda neutralizes the battery acid which you don't want to stay in there. good luck.

Hey, I actually know this! Use a pencil eraser! Seriously! Any kind. Try it. no mess. I was shocked when it first worked for me.

try dipping a qtip in coke and rubbing on the contacts or pour a couple of drops of it right on the contacts
