I had always wanted to make a red something deck using ali from cairo but could never get ahold of him for a reasonable price. Now they have basically reprinted ali in time spiral (fortune thief). Can anyone thing of any sort of combo or something I could do to make a deck around fortune thief, or is it a waste of time? I'm sure there has to be something out there. Willing to splash any color, but would prefer to stick with two (red and something else)

The classic answer for this one is to make the creature untargetable by spells and abilities, a typical blue ability (Spectral Cloak, Robe of Mirrors)

But, I think that the utility of Ali From Cairo (and Fortune Thief) is mitigated by the introduction of Platinum Angel in Mirrodin, as you can't lose for any reason and your opponents cannot win so long as you have it working on your side; and as an artifact, there is no need to splash a color, and the angel is a 4/4 to Fortune Theif's 0/1. And, also, with AfC/FT in play, you can die by other means (any of the cards with alternate win conditions, or 10 poison counters, exhaustion of draw deck, removal of Lich, etc. All AfC/FT prevents is damage that makes you go below 0 life -- so other effects that are not "damage" can still kill you by reducing you below 1 life.

Wall of Air is to be had in Tenth Edition, an distinguished a million/five flying wall for 3 mana. This makes for an overly well blocker, as it could actually quit each flying and non-flying creatures. Slithering Shade from Dissension is zero/a million with defender, and you'll be able to pump it up with black mana to soak up extra harm and even kill anything it blocks. And it has hellbent, so for those who do away with all of the playing cards to your hand you'll be able to assault with it. Grozoth from Ravinica is infrequent and high priced, however tremendous, and will assault as soon as in a whilst for those who pay a couple of mana. IT additionally allows you to seek for different playing cards. Tidewater Minion is the same, however smaller and less expensive. Primal Plasma from Planar Chaos is usually a a million/6 wall, or a three/three usual creature, or a two/two flyer. The immediate Thunderheads from Dissension allows you to create transitority partitions at the fly. Junktroller from Ravinica is a zero/6 artifact wall for 4 mana. Drift of Phantasms is zero/five and will fly. But you do not ought to use best partitions for protection. Any creature can block, so long as it is untapped. And blue has a few spells to untap a creature. Serra Sphinx from Planar Chaos is a colour-shifted variant of probably the most exceptional protective creatures ever, Serra Angel. Both are four/four, can fly, and do not faucet while attacking, so they may be able to assault your opponent and nonetheless be to be had to dam. Vigilance is an overly priceless capacity, and will accept to any creature with the blue attraction Auramancer's Guise.

Fortune Thief is only good the turn you Morph it. It will almost certainly be destroyed in some way afterwards. Removal and control are big these days. Anyway...you can still lose die with Fortune Thief out. All your opponent has to do is make you lose one life. Its happened to me while I had creatures and Worship in play.
