If you have ever looked at the hopelessness in the eyes of children whose parents are crack addicts...
Or meth cookers...
You will understand the pervasiveness and urgency of the problem.
I see the damage of drug abuse daily. These are my clients. Until we have better treatment for certain types of drug abuse, jails at least protect everyone else.
Oh, and decriminalizing marijuana is seen (rightfully?) by many as racially discriminatory.

What's wrong with decriminalizing?Jails aren't free and cost tax payers money to.Every junk you lock up will start stealing to afford his habit as soon as he gets out.How bout forced medical treatment for drug abusers?I intentionally call it abusers cause why should government be concerned with adults who on occasion enjoy recreational drugs but are overall and in the rest of their life, decent, law abiding tax paying citizens? And they do exist, mainly of course users of soft drugs.
You don't have to legalize everything or even anything but you could choose not to prosecute if there are no other problems in that persons life and he doesn't cause crime.
Jails are full with non violent drug offenders and it doesn't work for any.The occasional user has the stain of a criminal record and for the problematic user it's an endless in and out.
Junks need to be treated in a hospital and that will cost the society less in the long run than to lock them up over and over again, not to mention the cost of the crimes they do,emotionally to possible victims but also financially.

The borders need to be controlled better because this would slow down the amount coming in. There needs to be very stiff penalties for dealing (death penalty works for me) because over 90% of our prison population has drug dependency problems which means that the people who give them their drugs should be held as accessory to the crime. Many violent crimes such as murder and robbery are committed trying to feed the habit so the people dealing contributed to those crimes as well as the crime of dealing. Prisoners with substance problems should not just be locked away to live off of the taxpayers and watch TV. Take the weights, basketball courts, TVs and ping pong tables out of prisons and put drug abuse councilors in. Make rehab mandatory for criminals with drug use histories.
I feel very strongly about this issue as addiction runs in my family I have seen first hand what damage it can do. I have been on both sides of this issue and I have also been blessed with the opportunity to work with prisoners who want to get clean. It is something that can be fixed but it has to be handled aggressively.

Legalize them, it's the only way you'll have any control over them. Sell them at the store, at least it would put drug dealers out of business and off the street, you could age restrict it and get them out of the schoolyards, and make the government some taxes. Then you could monitor the children better because you know who is doing what drugs. Simple, remember when alcohol was made illegal, I don't either but I can read a history book. It did nothing but create more crime and alcohol consumption actually increased during that period. We should learn from our mistakes and change this regressive and failed "war on drugs" policy, it's not working and costing us millions.

Libertarians would decriminalize drugs. They rightfully point to alcohol prohibition and the lessons learned and ignored about creating a criminal class of citizens and overwhelming the legal system.

I think people who are simply using recreational marijuana should only be given fines or community service on their first few offenses, if we won't just decriminalize it altogether. We should reserve our court time and jail space for people selling drugs or using harder drugs. However, if you are driving under the influence, you should get a harsh punishment on the first time. This includes with drinking. Instead, we keep lowering the blood alcohol level and not focusing on the fact that people can get convicted for this sometimes 3 or 4 times before we take away their license and/or put them in jail. It's sick.

1)Legalize Pot... (retroactive), so the release of several million kids could relieve the pressure to build more prisons.
2) Repeal the "Controlled Substance Act" and specify Meth, Cocaine, and Heroin (in their various forms) as illegal.
3) Start up a WPA like Roosevelt did so all them freshly released pot smokers and unemployed cops, prosecutors, and judges can do something productive.

Well, I am glad you asked.
First, we need to start drug testing welfare recipients. I don't want my tax dollars going to pay for someone's drugs.
Enabling them is not the answer. Cut them off and get those kids out of the houses that have the adults doing drugs, so they can't get into them or use them or sell them to their friends.
Then, the illegals need to be cracked down on, especially the southern border. They are hauling them in faster than we can ship them back out.
We need to save our children from this crap that is taking over our country and start teaching our children respect.
Merry Christmas!
